Questions like how do I get this information or how to write a newspaper article are two of the many questions I regularly receive my videos. Hello and welcome, I’m Heathcliff and it’s about time to take you behind the scenes and show you Lions Ground’s workflow to answer all of those questions. CHAPTERS: The 3 fundamentals how I write news articles are:
1. KNOW WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT
What sources do I use? This helps you what to write about.
2. RESEARCH
How do I perform research? Writing a news article requires extensive research to build your articles with facts.
3. WRITING A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
How to write a newspaper article? When you know what to write about and you have done your research you are ready to write a newspaper article.
KNOW WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT
It depends what kind of newspaper you are or want to be. For example, there are newspapers specific about science, celebrities or general newspapers like Lions Ground. If you are about to start an online newspaper or you are a young newspaper magazine than I recommend to use:
⦁ Mainstream media and major newspapers Mainstream media and major newspapers always give away what topics are hot. By opening the articles you can see how their leaders behave. Does it receive a lot of shares or other interactions than this could be interesting to write about?
⦁ Google trends are the best dynamic online database there is. This tool is public and gives you data what currently is trendy today, which can be filtered on countries, search terms and etc.
⦁ Google Alert – I recommend using Google Alert. With Google Alert, you can enter specific search terms and receive the best fresh Google results by e-mail as it happens.
⦁ Your connections In time you build a reputation and automatic you receive tips from key role figures. My articles exist for about 40% from hackers, insiders, whistleblowers or experts.
RESEARCH
When I know what to write I go to the next phase, the most time-consuming part, yes, research. Before I do my research I first ask myself what type of audience I want to target? I focus on mixed audience, I always want to deliver my audience easily digestible information with a little push by providing deeper information. For example scientific facts. As an example, I show you how I performed research before I wrote the article “Watch how a pilot lands F-15 Eagle with only one wing”. With this article, I prove that you can give old news new life again by providing new information powered by new facts, but that requires research. Because you are not allowed to write an article without knowledge about that particular topic. What you are watching it is my extensive research document. Due to the fact this story was told by the pilot self, I watch the video in question to get all the details of the story. Then I divided my source list into two sections: General resources and Empirical resources. I put uber information under empirical resources. The first place I look at is Wikipedia. Now, as a reporter I know I can’t trust. But what I can do, I can always look into their references and external links. They provide great sources that refer to journal articles, books, encyclopedias or interviews which you need in order to perform research. As you can see I studied information that originates from websites provided by experts, military, government, manufacturers and I even read two books. Tip: Use academic databases. Most academic databases give you the ability to ask for very specific information. Write As you can see I wrote down all the information that I want to use in the article or that will provide substantial power to my facts. Dare to ask questions Contact experts or authorities, which I did as you can see here to get answers or opinions. Tip: You can also quote parts of their answers. When you are done it’s time to analyze your research. Highlight what you think it’s important you might to use in your article or delve into it. I will include a link in the description bow so you can look at it.
WRITING A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
When I’m done with the research than I start writing my news article. There are a few things you need to remember:
The ⦁ Rough draft I start writing articles as a rough draft. Meaning, I don’t care about the typos or the decoration to safe time. I do this when I am finished.
⦁ I write a conclusion in the future regarding the story in the last paragraph. What happens in the future, for example, “The Israeli military is about the request a change in the training program to minimize the collision”
⦁ Apart from the final paragraph. I write in past tense. What you see here is the heat-map. From red to gray, red comes the most important information and gray less important information. From important to less important. The red and the orange are visible above the fold. When a reader lands on my article the reader read the very important information followed up by the second important paragraph. Did you know most readers stop reading after 2 or 3 paragraphs? That’s it’s very important to stick with the heatmap to increase the change the reader reads the entire article.
The 1st paragraph in red answers:
- ’’’Who’’’-who was involved?
- ’’’What’’’-what happened?
- ’’’Where’’’-where did it happen?
- ’’’Why’’’-why did it happen?
- ’’’When’’’-when did it happen?
- ’’’How’’’-how did it happen? I answered.
- Who: “An Israeli pilot”
- What: “F-15D Eagle collided with an A-4Skyhawk”
- Where: “Israel”
- Why: ” The pilots in training couldn’t see each other because they were flying stomach to stomach”
- When: “On 1 May 1983”
- How: “After the F-15 pilot fired a missile the jets flew towards each other and collapsed”
The 1st paragraph which is also is called the lead is finished. Than starting from the 2nd paragraph to the bottom I add supporting factual information, descending from most crucial information to less important. When I’ve completed the draft I’m going to copy and paste the information into my editor and check for grammatical error and stylize the newspaper article. The reason I do that is to prevent lazy eyes and keep the eyes entertained.
TIPS & FACTS
⦁ 3rd person
I never use “I, Me, My, Mine, We, Us, Our, Ours, You, Your, Yours” except for quotations
⦁ Use engaging headlines – Use Google to get ideas
⦁ High quality featured image
Featured image is the business card of the article when it’s being shared on social networks people want to click on it. Don’t use misleading images.
⦁ Rich media
I always insert media: Images, Tweets or Facebook posts or videos. I try to put the videos at the end of the news article.
⦁ Links
I always include max. two outgoing links and max. 3-4 internal links to other related articles, tags or categories. On this way, I provide my reader more information and the reader stays longer on my website.
⦁ Source
If my news article is based on an article I make sure I mention the source name.
⦁ Length of the article
My articles consist at least out of 300 words. Now you know how to write a newspaper article and you’ve got this opportunity to sneak behind the scenes of Lions Ground.
